The Birth of California Cuisine, revisited

Serena Says:

The East Bay just keeps on giving! As I dig around Oakland and Berkeley to update my guidebook, I keep finding new inspiration, even in places I’ve looked before. But with Lisa Rogovin (i.e. the epicurean concierge) at the helm of a new Gourmet Ghetto food tour, north Shattuck’s famous intersections are rediscovered.

Here’s Lisa telling us the Cowgirl Creamery Story

Start at the Cheese Board with a triple creme from Cowgirl Cremery, and go from there for wine tasting, pastries, fresh polenta, coffee cupping, soup, tea, chocolate and more. But more than the sampling, our group got to meet the man behind Masse’s delicate baked treats, the friends behind Berkeley Vintage, the story behind the beans at Peet’s and the method of stock-making at Soop. These are morsels of know-how we can all take back into our kitchens and our imaginations planning our next slow food meal.

Here’s the beautiful pear tarts from Masse’s Pastries!

Book your own tour with Lisa, she’s got two regular weekly tours of Gourmet Ghetto, in addition to her SF Ferry Building tours, more info: http://www.inthekitchenwithlisa.com/
